Hidden away on Paynes Prairie (and not on the official park map) is this Florida Cracker house.  The house appears to date from the 19th century and probably belonged to a Cracker rancher or other pioneer settler.  A large pasture on the north side of the house would have been used for cracker cattle and horses.

Since there was no information about the house, it was unclear if it were originally part of a larger pioneer settlement or whether it existed alone in rural isolation.   Without venturing off the trail, we weren’t able to find evidence of similar structures.  The house is located at Jackson’s Gap Trail, which is named after pioneer rancher Archie Jackson.
